Mrs. Equilar Mae Muhammad

Equilar Mae Muhammad was born on August 2, 1936, in Carlisle, Arkansas, to the late Earl and Ruby Young. She passed away on Thursday May 7, 2026 at the age of 89 years. She graduated in 1954 from Blakely High School and later relocated to Michigan in 1957, where she built a life rooted in faith, family, and community. Equilar retired in 2002 from Saginaw General (now Covenant Healthcare) after many years of dedicated service. She was a faithful member of Greater Freewill Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend James Dorsey and the late Reverend James Speed. While at Freewill, she served as president of the usher board, a member of the pastor’s anniversary committee, and as a church mother. Equilar was known for her caring spirit, wisdom, honesty and love for those around her. She loved to dress fashionably, travel and spend time with her family and friends. Equilar leaves to cherish her precious memory her children, Sheila Swilley and Sheldon Poole (Donna); and special son, J.C. Davenport. Grandchildren Jason Swilley, Demeka (Willie) Drain, Shequilar (Darian) Broussard, Sheldon Poole Jr., Iesha (George) Copeland and Joi (Reginald Young) Poole; along with 17 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Equilar is also survived by her siblings: Artice Nichols of Carlisle, Arkansas, Ollie Reed of Saginaw, Michigan, Gwendolyn Young of Detroit, Michigan, and Sherman Young of Spring, TX. Equilar shared special bonds with many extended family members and dear friends, including her goddaughters Deloris Haley and Tina Houze; special friends Lillie Sangster and Liz Young; and sisters-in-Christ Beatrice Manning and Maggie Mack. Equilar Mae Muhammad was preceded in death by her late husbands, Charlie Harris and Jacob Muhammad; daughters, Phyllis Goss and Kyra Miller; grandsons James Poole and Andre Poole; parents, Earl and Ruby Young; sisters Mary Adams, Velma Johnson, and Mandy Young; brothers Earl Young and John Albert Young,; special brother-in-law Norman Adams Sr. Equilar Muhammad will be remembered for her strength, kindness, faith, and the love she poured into her family and friends. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Family hour will take place at 11:00 a.m. with the funeral service commencing at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, May 18, 2026 at Evans & Browne's Funeral Home, 441 N. Jefferson Ave., Saginaw, MI 48607. Elder Shawn Bivens will officiate. Interment will take place in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 S. Washington Ave., Saginaw, MI 48601. Visitation is from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
